Alexander Ponton, solicitor and procurator fiscal for the City of Edinburgh, was resident at No. 6 from about 1826 to 1829. He was born 12 August 1769, son of Alexander Ponton, wright in Edinburgh, and Isobel Anderson. After working as a solicitor in Edinburgh, in 1807 he was appointed procurator fiscal by the Magistrates of Edinburgh. The 11th report of the Commissioners of the Courts of Justice in Scotland (1822) record that Alexander Ponton had paid £300 to his predecessor in office as an inducement to resign. Alexander Ponton died at Edinburgh on 29 December 1831.
Alexander Ponton married at Edinburgh on 28 October 1795, Barbara Ponton, daughter of Mungo Ponton, farmer at Balgreen. They had five children: Alexander (b. 1796), Isabella Anderson (b. 1800), Margaret (b. 1803), Mungo, (b. 1805) and Jane Stewart (b. 25 February 1809). Barbara Ponton died 9 March 1809.
Mungo Ponton, writer, was also listed at No. 6 in the directories of 1826/27 and 1827/28. He was the son of Alexander Ponton, born 20 August 1805 and died 5 February 1846. He is not to be confused with his cousin and brother-in-law, Mungo Pontin WS (1802-1880).
