T Alex Hill, printseller and publisher to the Queen and Royal Scottish Academy, was resident No. 3 in 1879/80. Thomas Alexander Hill was born in Edinburgh about 1833, son of publisher Alexander Hill (died 1860) and nephew of the photograph pioneer David Octavius Hill (1802-1870). His business premises were at 13 South Castle Street.
T Alex Hill married Jessie McPherson on 1 June 1870, at Arrochar, Dunbartonshire. Their son Ranald Hill was born at No. 3 Malta Terrace on 12 December 1879. Their sons Norman Alexander Hill (born 4 April 1871), Ian McPherson Hill (born 17 May 1872) and Douglas Hill (born 1874) would also have been living there.
