Alexander M’Leod

Alexander M’Leod, a supervisor of excise, lived at No. 8 between 1846 and 1853.[1] He was born at Assynt, Sutherland about 1786.[2] The census of 1851, when he was living at No. 8, recorded his occupation as retired supervisor of excise.[3] In 1861 he was living at 45 Lauriston Place, which he occupied until his death on 13 March 1862 at Ben Rhydding, Yorkshire where he was staying temporarily for the good of his health.[4]

Alexander MacLeod married Catherine Rose sometime before their son William was born on 12 April 1818.[5] Catherine Rose was born in Caithness in 1793,[6] and died on 01 December 1861 at 45 Lauriston Place.[7]

Their youngest daughter Catherine was recorded living at No. 8 Malta Terrace in the 1851 census.[8] She was born in Edinburgh on 01 January 1832[9] and married Walter Reid, a farmer at Drem, Athelstaneford, on 25 April 1854.[10] She predeceased her husband who died.

Their eldest daughter, Mary MacLeod was born 4 January 1824.[11] She married David Cannon McConnel at No. 8 Malta Terrace on 25 April 1848.[12] He was a grazier and farmer at Cressbrook, Moreton Bay, Queensland.[13] She was the author of a short memoir Memories of Days long gone by[14] and died in Queensland, Australia on 04 January 1910.[15]

Their son Rev. Walter Ross MacLeod was born at Coupar Angus on 08 January 1827.[16] He also spent time in Australia, becoming Queensland’s first settled presbyterian minister in 1851.[17] He returned to Scotland in 1854[18] and, at Seton, East Lothian, married Barbara Fergusson on 15 September 1859.[19],[20] He died of tuberculosis aged 38 on 20 October 1865 at 2 Steel’s Place, Morningside.[21]
