Alexander Smart, coal merchant, lived at No. 5 from 1891 to 1895. He was born at Hawick on 27 November 1838, son of Alexander Smart and Agnes Prest. He served in the navy before settling in Edinburgh as a coal merchant. In 1861 he was an assistant engineer, 3rd class, on H.M.S. Dee, at Plymouth. In 1871, he was an engineer aboard H.M.S. Sealark.
He was married in London on 24 December 1860 to Helen Parr. Five of their children were living at No. 5 in 1891, the eldest born in Ireland, the youngest in Edinburgh and the others in England. Helen Smart (22) was a governess; Alfred Campbell Smart (20), a chemist’s assistant; John Earnest Smart (14), a chemist’s apprentice; Agnes (13) and Jeannie (9).
