Duncan Grant M’Dougall

Duncan Grant McDougall, a teacher, lived at No. 6 between 1833 and 1840.1 Though he does not appear in the Post Office Directory before 1837-38, he was recorded at No. 6 in 1833, and may have begun living there a year or two earlier. Duncan Grant McDougall was born at Urquhart, Inverness about 1798.2 In 1833 and 1837 he was described as a teacher3 and the PO Directory styled him ‘Esq.’

Duncan Grant McDougall was appointed Superintendent of Police in Kirkcudbrightshire sometime before 1844.4 He served in this position, “an active and intelligent superintendent of police”,5 until his death, caused by consumption, on 10 July 1857.6 By one account he was “a gentleman of rare intellectual ability, of polished manners, and great moral worth”.7

Duncan Grant McDougall married Eleanor Catherine McMurdo at Annan on 14 April 1829.8 They had two sons born at No. 6 Malta Terrace:

  • Kenneth George Thomas McKenzie McDougall was born on 15 September 18339 and died just over a year later in November 1834.10
  • Douglas John McDougall was born on 17 March 1837.11 He died of scarlet fever at Kirkcudbright on 17 February 1856.12
