Edward Owen Crichton, R.N., lived at No. 8 in 1872-73.[1] He was born on 24 April 1824[2] and baptised in South Leith parish on 20 May 1824, son of George Crichton, a ship owner, and Gifford Allan.[3] He joined the Royal Navy in 1846, was appointed Assistant Engineer in 1848 and Chief Engineer in 1852. In 1857 he was awarded the Baltic Medal.[4] After 24 years’ service, including 11 years at sea, he retired from the navy in June 1870.[5] In 1871 he was recorded in his widowed mother’s house in Gateshead,[6] before moving to Malta Terrace. He moved to 30 Royal Circus on leaving Malta Terrace[7] and in 1881 was at 6 Greenhill Place,[8] where he died on 26 July 1894.[9]
A painting of ‘British naval ships off a mountainous coast’ dated 22 November 1861, attributed to Edward O. Crichton, was sold at auction in 2018.[10]
Edward Owen Crichton married Mary Ann Dearden in 1852, in Lewisham, Kent.[11] She was born in Lancashire in 1838[12] and died on 31 October 1876.[13] Edward Crichton’s second wife was Mary Charlotte Thompson, daughter of solicitor Edward James Thompson. They married at Notting Hill, London on 14 April 1880.[14] She died at Bath, Somerset in 1911.[15]

Edward Owen Crichton is my Grandmother’s father. His only son, George Edward Allan Crichton was also in the Navy and went down with the “Black Prince” in 1916.
Edward’s mother, Gifford, was the daughter of William & Margaret Allan and the grandaughter of Gifford (Somervail) & James Allan.
