Evan Baillie Fraser Tant, a master butcher, was at No. 1 / 7 St Bernard’s Row for a decade, from 1898 to 1909.1 He was born in Edinburgh on 29 March 1866, son of William Tant, also a butcher, and Ann Plummer.2 Evan B.F. Tant was working as a butcher at the age of 15 when the 1881 census was taken.3 Thirty years later, the 1911 census recorded him as an employed butcher living at 33 London Road.4 He died of a heart attack at Leith docks on 02 April 1919.5

Evan B.F. Tant married Elizabeth Reid, widow of Hugh Rose Smith, in Edinburgh on 12 February 1890.6 She was born in Edinburgh on 19 August 1860 daughter of Peter Reid, mason, and Elizabeth Auchterlonie.7 She married Hugh Rose Smith in 1879.8 He died aged 38 years in 1889.9 In 1939 she was living with her daughter Annie McCulloch Smith at 92 Chalk Hill Road, Wembley, London10 and died in London in 1943.11

The four children of Evan Tant and Elizabeth Reid, along with two daughters by Elizabeth’s first marriage, were living at No. 1 Malta Terrace in 1901.12 The youngest was born there in 1899.13

Jane Tant was born in Edinburgh in 1890.14 She was recorded as Jeannie Tant, a clerkess in a gentleman’s outfitters, in the 1911 census. When she married three months later, she was a confectioner’s shop assistant. She married three times. Her first husband was Robert John Anderson, a house painter, who died of tuberculosis on 12 July 1916. Her second marriage, on 07 February 1919, was to James Burns, a skilled labourer. She was widowed a second time when he died of bronchial asthma on 23 June 1925.15

Jane Tant married her third husband, Francis Fraser Henderson, on 23 July 1926.16 He was employed by Alder & M’Kay, manufacturers of gas meters, and died suddenly at 443 Gorgie Road on 26 February 1947,17 making Jane Tant a widow for the third time. She died in Edinburgh at the beginning of June 1957.18

Eveline Tant was born in Edinburgh in 1893.19 She was a confectioner’s shop assistant in 1911 and a commercial cashier in 1925. She married in Aberdeen, by declaration, John Kennedy Kelly, a motor sales manager, on 20 August 1925.20 She died in Ayrshire in 1966.21

Evan Baillie Fraser Tant was born in Edinburgh in 1897.22 He was an apprentice law clerk when he died of heart disease aged 17 years on 13 October 1914.23

Terence (Terry) Yellowlees Tant was born at No. 1 Malta Terrace on 10 November 1899.24 He married Catherine Drummond Gourlay on 03 December 1919 at 24 Raeburn Place.25 At the time of his marriage Terry Tant was serving in the 53rd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, a reserve battalion of young soldiers who received basic training but did not see active service. On 19 June 1921 he was recorded in the census as a patient in the Bellahouston Military Hospital.26 He died in Edinburgh on 19 February 1986.27

Evan Tant’s step-daughters, children of Elizabeth Reid and Hugh Rose Smith, were recorded in the 1901 census at No. 1 Malta Terrace with the surname Tant and middle name Smith.28 The elder, Elizabeth Smith / Tant, was born Elizabeth Auchterlonie Smith in 1880.29 She was described as a butcher’s clerkess in the 1901 census.30 Later in 1901, she married George Samuel Thompson, an assessor’s clerk, in Glasgow31 and died after child birth in the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh on 05 August 1913.32 Her daughter was named after her aunt33

Evan Tant’s younger step-daughter was Annie McCulloch Smith was born on 15 June 1882.34 She was 18 and living at No. 1 (7 St Bernard’s Row) when the 1901 census was taken.35 [St George, 685/1 46/ 07; 26 August 2024). In 1939 she was described as ‘Massage Hospital Sister,’ living with her widowed mother at 92 Chalk Hill Road, Wembley, London.36
