Frances Ronaldson

Frances Ronaldson and her family lived at No. 3 between 1843 and 1853.¹ She was the widow of John Ronaldson in Loquhariot who died on 27 October 1834.² She was born Frances Torrance on 11 October 1789, daughter of James Torrance in Oxgangs and Anne Howie,³ and died at Haverstock-hill, London on 29 September 1863.⁴

Frances Torrance married John Ronaldson at Crichton on 26 December 1818.⁵ He was a farmer and captain in the Edinburgh militia. Five of their eight children were resident at No. 3 for the census in March 1851:⁶

• • Jessie Harriet Ronaldson was baptised at Crichton, Midlothian on 14 February 1821.⁷ She died unmarried at Eltham, Kent on 24 December 1898.⁸
  • John David Ronaldson was baptised on 23 September 1822 at Crichton.⁹ He was clerk for an Edinburgh gas company in 1851 and later an insurance broker. He died unmarried in London on 17 July 1875.¹⁰
  • Barbara Ronaldson was baptised at Borthwick on 29 May 1829.¹¹ She married John Logan on 27 June 1860,¹² and died 28 September 1897 at Bombola, New South Wales.¹³
  • Thomas Ronaldson was baptised at Borthwick on 15 November 1830.¹⁴ A merchant’s clerk in 1851, he was later a member of the Baltic Exchange. In 1911 he was described as a retired ship owner.¹⁵ He married Jane Marion Dunlop on 27 June 1861,¹⁶and died at Bickley, Kent on 25 May 1920.¹⁷
  • Francis Hume Ronaldson was baptised at Borthwick on 18 December 1832.¹⁸ He was a clerk in an insurance office in 1851 and died in London aged 23 on 07 February 1856.¹⁹
