Frederick Smith and his family lived at No. 3 between 1881 and 1891.[1] Frederick Smith was born at Cambridge in October 1845, son of Charles Amos Smith and his wife Elizabeth Chapman.[2] He was a schoolmaster in Cambridge, recorded there in the 1871 census,[3] before taking up a post at Dollar Academy. Shortly after moving to Edinburgh and taking up residence at No. 3, he was described as an artist (‘oil colour’)[4] and as a teacher of science.[5]

In 1882, Frederick Smith entered the Edinburgh Theological College. He was ordained into the Episcopal Church in 1888, when he became a chaplain at St Ninian’s Cathedral, Perth. He served as rector of St Luke’s Glasgow between 1890 and 1895, and private chaplin to the Hon. Arthur Hay Drummond at Cromlix 1895 to 1901.[6] At the time of the 1901 Census the family was living at The Limes, Dunblane,[7] but in the same year Fred Smith became priest in charge at South Queensferry, where he remained until he retired in 1917. Between 1915 and 1918 he was also a chaplain to the Royal Navy and Naval Hospital.[8] On his retirement, he deputised for the rector at Clifton, Nottingham and he died at Mapperley, Nottingham on 5 October 1931.[9]

As well as publishing several text books for schools, he was a keen student of stone tools and early man in Scotland and author of The Stone Ages in North Britain and Ireland (1909).[10]

Frederick Smith married Emily Mary Baker (b. at Cambridge) in 1870.[11] She was the daughter of John Baker, a naturalist, and Emily Branford, born at Downham, Norfolk in 1847.[12] She died in Nottingham on 23 December 1926.[13]

Frederick Smith and Emily Baker had seven children. Five of the children were recorded at No. 3 in the 1881 census, and the sixth was born there shortly after the census. The youngest, Evelyn P. Smith, was born in Glasgow after the family’s departure from Malta Terrace. The children were:
