George Adam

George Adam and his large family were resident at No. 6 when the 1901 census was taken,1 but do not appear to have lived there for long. He was listed there in the electoral register only in 1900-01.2 He was born at Monymusk on 02 August 1843, son of Peter Adam, a carpenter, and his wife Catherine Gerrie.3 In 1901 he was described as a merchant draper,4 having worked his way up from being draper’s warehouseman in 1871.5 The family moved to Glasgow after leaving Malta Terrace, and were living at 13 Lawrence Street, Partick in 1911.6 He died at Kirklea, Brodick, Bute on 04 October 1930.7

George Adam married Isabella Moir on 24 July 1879 at Netherton farm, Thornhill, near Stirling.8 She was born 12 September 1854 at Doune, daughter of William Moir in Netherton and Grace McFarlane.9 She died at Paisley on 15 March 1931, a few months after her husband. Her home address at the time was Kirklea, Brodick, Bute.10

George Adam and Isabella Moir had eight children. The two eldest, Peter and William, emigrated to North America in 1900, but the remaining six were living at No. 6 in 1901.11

They were:

  • George Adam, born at Corstorphine in 1884,12 was an apprentice draper in 1901 and a salesman at a home furniture store in 1911.13 He married Helen Mark at Clydebank on 22 August 1914.14 He died at Stirling on 02 February 1957.15
  • John Hutton Adam was born in Edinburgh on 10 January 1886.16 In 1901 he was an apprentice grocer, living with his parents at No. 6,17 and in 1911 he was a grocer’s shop assistant.18 He married Janette Crawford Denny on 05 October 1911, in Glasgow,19 and died in 1954 at Burntisland, Fife.20
  • Arthur Grant Adam was born on 08 September 1888. In 1911, like his brother John, he was a grocer’s shop assistant in Glasgow.21 He married Janet Hutchison McLean on 09 September 1927 at Dalmuir, Glasgow.22 He died in Glasgow in 1973.23
  • Catherine Grace Adam was born in Edinburgh on 24 March 1891. She was a post office assistant in 1911.24 She married Peter Currie 20 December 1919,25 and died at Brodick, Arran in 1969.26
  • Isabella Hilda Adam was born in Edinburgh on 20 October 1894.27 She worked in Glasgow as a telephonist before emigrating to the United States in 1926.28
  • Christina Ethel Adam was born in Edinburgh on 06 May 1896.29 She worked in Glasgow as a telephonist before emigrating to the United States in 1926.30
