George Brown

George Brown, a law clerk, lived at No. 1 between 1881 and 1887.1 He was born at Monimail, Fife on 22 December 1844, son of John Brown and Isabella Yule.2 He was employed by Messrs. Dundas and Wilson, a legal firm with offices at 16 Charlotte Square. He was an elder in the Free Church at Juniper Green and later the session clerk.3 Ill health prevented him working for several years before he died on 29 October 1908 at Juniper Green, Edinburgh.4

He married Margaret Buttercase on 15 August 1879 at Monimail, Fife.5 She was born at Collessie, Fife on 07 February 1851, daughter of Robert Buttercase, a farmer at Daftmill, and Isabella Dingwall.6 She died at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Quebec, Canada on 23 September 1927.7

Their first child, Isabella Brown was born at Comely Bank, Edinburgh on 4 June 1880,8 before the family moved to Malta Terrace, but died there in 1881.9 Their second daughter, Elizabeth Margaret Brown, was born at No. 1 Malta Terrace on 20 April 1882.10 She died at the age of 4 in 1886.11

George Brown and Margaret Buttercase had a son after the family left Malta Terrace. Eric John Stanley Brown, born at Colinton on 30 July 1887.12 He emigrated to North America, lived in both Canada and the USA, worked in the insurance business, married twice and died on 18 June 1961 in Quebec, Canada.13
