George Storrar Brown

George Storrar Brown lived at No. 2 for sixteen years, between 1882 to 1898. He was born at East Wemyss, Fife on 21 October 1840, son of brewer James Brown (1814-1888) and Isabella Storrar (1815-1891). He was described as a draper’s assistant in the 1891 Census, and as a shopkeeper (draper) in 1881 when he lived at 1 Pembroke Place, Edinburgh. He died 8 March 1900 at 91 Broughton Street.

George S Brown married his second wife, Grace McPherson, in 1880. His first wife, Agnes Brodie Torbain, who died in 1878, was the mother of his two daughters, who were also resident at No. 2 in 1891. Isabella Storrar Brown, born 5 July 1873 at Anstruther, and Ann Torbain Brown, 15 (born 1876, Edinburgh; died 1949, Kennoway). A third daughter Agnes Annan Brown died in infancy in 1872.
