Helen Leslie

Helen Leslie was householder at No. 8 from about 1891 to 1901. She was the widow of Andrew Leslie, a clothier and tailor in Earlston, and born Helen Bain, on 30 Nov 1820, Channelkirk, Berwickshire, daughter of of John Bain and Margaret Dalglish. She married Andrew Leslie (1816-1882), a successful tailor and clothier trading at 43 Main Street, Earlston. In the censuses of 1891 and 1901 Helen Leslie was described as living on private means.

Also living at No. 8 in 1891 were her daughters Margaret (aged 47) and Mary Ellen (38), and two grandchildren, Aileen (5) and Brenda Halliday (4). The two grand-daughters were born in Rangoon, Burma, children of Michael Halliday (1853-1934) and Christine Bain Leslie (1855-1933). The unmarried Margaret Leslie and Mary Ellen Leslie were still resident in 1901, along with their sister Caroline Leslie (21) and brother John Leslie (50), a soft goods warehouseman.
