The Leslie family

No. 8 was occupied by two generations of women from the Leslie family between 1891 and 1931.1 Mrs Helen Leslie was householder from about 1891 to 1901.2 She was the widow of Andrew Leslie, a clothier and tailor in Earlston, Berwickshire. She was born Helen Bain, on 30 November 1820, at Channelkirk, Berwickshire, daughter of John Bain and Margaret Dalglish.3 She was recorded living at Ugston (Oxton), Berwickshire in the 1841 census, with the occupation dress maker,4 and later that year married Andrew Leslie in Edinburgh, on 06 October 1841.5 He was a successful tailor and clothier, employing nine men and two boys in 1871, trading at 43 Main Street, Earlston.6 She was widowed in August 18827 and in the censuses of 1891 and 1901 was described as living on private means.8,9 She died at No. 8 on 04 April 1901 and was buried at Earlston.10, 11

Andrew Leslie and Helen Bain had nine children, eight daughters and a son. Four of their daughters and their son were recorded in censuses at No. 8 Malta Terrace, and from 1904 a Miss Leslie was listed in the Post Office Directory.

The eldest was Margaret Leslie, born at Earlston, Berwickshire on 04 March 1843.12 She was resident at No. 8, and living on private means, when the 1891, 1901, 1911 and 1921 censuses were taken.13,14,15,16 The 1905, 1915, 1920 and 1925 valuation roll listed her as proprietor.17 She died unmarried on 10 May 1929.18

Mary Ellen Leslie was at No. 8 in 1891 and 1901. She was born on 14 November 1850 at Earlston, Berwickshire. She died unmarried at Johnstone, Dumfriesshire on 23 October 1915.19

Ida Georgina Smith Leslie was born at Earlston, Berwickshire on 20 June 1862.20 She was at school in Edinburgh, boarding with a family, when the 1881 census was taken.21 Ten years later she was a governess for the Sampson family in Mansfield, Derbyshire.22 For the censuses of 1901,23 191124 and 192125 she was at No. 8 Malta Terrace, her occupation teacher. She died in Edinburgh on 29 March 1952.26

Caroline Andrina Leslie was listed as householder at No. 8 in the Post Office Directory of 1930-31.27 The Valuation Roll of that year describes her as the proprietrix.28 She was born at Earlston, Berwickshire on 27 October 188629 and lived at No. 8 from a young age until about 1932. She was a school teacher and died in Edinburgh on 31 January 1951.30 She was unmarried.

John Leslie, the only son of Andrew Leslie and Helen Bain, was recorded at No. 8 in 1901 census with the occupation ‘warehouseman soft goods.’31 He was born at Earlston, Berwickshire on 12 March 1847.32 He married Margaret Drysdale at Newington, Edinburgh in 1872. She was found dead at 2 Gibbs Entry, Edinburgh on 22 April 1904, following an overdose of laudanum.33 John Leslie died a few days later at Ellerlea, Johnstone, Dumfriesshire on 05 May 1904.34

Two grandchildren of Andrew Leslie and Janet Bain were also recorded at No. 8 in the 1891 census, Aileen Halliday, aged 5, and Brenda Halliday, aged 4.35 A third granddaughter, Enid Halliday, was recorded at No. 8 in the 1901 census.36 They were all daughters of Christine Bain Leslie and her husband Michael Halliday.

Aileen Margaret Halliday was born at Rangoon, Burma on 23 December 1885.37 She married Vyvyan Marr, an actuary, at St George’s Parish Church, Edinburgh on 09 February 1907.38,39 In 1911 they were living in West Ealing, London40 and she died at Kings Lynn, Norfolk on 27 July 1966.41

Brenda Maria Emma Halliday was born at Rangoon, Burma on 09 January 1887.42 In 1911 she was a TB patient at Linford Sanatorium in Hampshire.43 She died unmarried at Sutton, Surrey on 11 June 1914.44

Enid Ella Leslie Halliday was born at Bathgate, West Lothian on 31 May 1897.45 In 1947 she married Robert Turnbull Simpson at Haymarket, Edinburgh46 and was widowed in 1959.47 She died in a nursing home at East Bilney, Norfolk on 25 June 1975.48
