Hugh Elder

Hugh Walker Elder, a commercial traveller, was at No. 1 from about 1891 to 1894. He was born in Edinburgh on 28 October 1857, the son of Alexander Elder (1823-1897), a sauce and pickle manufacturer, and his wife Grace Spittal Walker (1826-96). By 1901, Hugh Elder was a coffee essence manufacturer in Leith. He died at East Trinity Road, Leith, on 29 October 1846.

Hugh Elder married Maggie (Madge) Medcalf (1863-1941) at Kendal parish church on 16 July 1885. They would have had two of their children with them at No. 1 Malta Terrace, Margaret Medcalf Elder (born 1886) and Alexander Elder (born 1890).

  1. I am searching for the history of the company Pattison, Elder & Co (1882 and floated in 1896 – Pattisons, Limited – and in liquidation in 1899). Do you know if this Alexander Elder is the same. I have no reference of the Royal Holyrood Sauce after 1879 so it matches in time. I am thankful for any information.
