John Gillot lived at Malta House from 1823 to about 1826.1 He was described as an agent in post office directories, and as a merchant in a court report in The Scotsman on 21 February 1827.2 By September 1827 he had moved to 5 Hermitage Place.3 He appears to have come to Edinburgh from Sheffield, Yorkshire where parish registers described him as a merchant.4 A John Gillot, son of Malin Gillot, shearsmith, was baptised in Sheffield on 17 June 1768.5 John Gillot was in Edinburgh at the beginning of 1819, when his youngest daughter was born,6 but his earliest entry in an Edinburgh directory is from 1821, when he was at Gardeners’ Hall, Tobago Street.7 He died at the age of 66 on 07 June 1834, when he was living at 5 Hermitage Place, Stockbridge.8
He married Elizabeth (Betty) Makin at Sheffield, Yorkshire on 09 July 1807.9 Betty Mekin, daughter of James Mekin, cutler, was baptised in Sheffield on 24 May 1774.10 She was recorded in the 1841 census living in Raeburn Place with her daughters Ellen and Sarah.11 In 1842 she moved to 1 Eyre Place12 where she died 01 January 1843 aged 68.13
John Gillot and Elizabeth Makin had several children born and baptised at Sheffield between 1808 and 1815. Their eldest daughter, Mary Makin Gillot was born at Sheffield on 16 June 1811.14 She is likely to have lived with her parents before her marriage to Captain Robert Andrew Wauch, late of the 48th regiment, at St John’s Chapel, Edinburgh on 06 September 1827.15 They emigrated to Australia and Mary died at Yesaba, Macleay River, New South Wales on 15 March 1865.16
Ellen Stubbs Gillot was born at Sheffield, Yorkshire on 01 April 1815.17 She was living with her widowed mother at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh in 1841,18 and would have lived at No. 4 Malta Terrace before that. She was recorded living in England with her sister Sarah Gillot or Stanhouse, in the censuses of 187119 and 1881,20 and died, unmarried, in London on 27 March 1884.21
The youngest daughter of John Gillot and Elizabeth Makin, Sarah Smith Gillot, was born in Edinburgh on 18 January 1819.22 She married a banker and widower, Alexander Stanhouse of Stockton Lodge, Cheshire, on 02 April 1857 at Daresbury, Cheshire.23 He died two years’ later on 04 October 1859.24
The widowed Sarah Gillot or Stanhouse, an annuitant, was recorded living in Pendleton, Lancashire in 1861, with her children and step-children.25 She was in Clifton, Gloucestershire in 187126 and at Malvern Lodge, Chew Magna, Somerset in 1881.27 She died at Bournemouth, Hampshire on 26 February 1905.28
