James Bruce Gairn lived at No. 1 between 1885 and 1898.1 He was born in Edinburgh on 24 January 1845, son of bootmaker Andrew Gairn and his wife Helen Bruce.2 At the age of 16, he is recorded in the 1861 Census at 180 Rose Street, occupation “boot closer”.3 At the time of the 1891 Census he was living at No. 1 Malta Terrace, occupation clerk.4 He died at 2 Meadow Place, Edinburgh on 09 November 1916.5

James Bruce Gairn married Margaret Gunn on 25 June 1869, at 135 Rose Street, Edinburgh.6 She was born at Kirbister, Orkney on 16 April 1845, the daughter of James Gunn, a mason, and Isabella Taylor.7 She died in on 6 February 1925.8

The 1891 census recorded all seven sons of James Bruce Gairn and Margaret Gunn living at No. 1 Malta Terrace. They were:

  • Andrew Gairn, born 13 October 1870 in Edinburgh.9 Described as a chemist in 1891,10 he qualified as a medical practitioner in 1901.11 He died in 1942.12 He married Isabella Mair in 1897.13
  • James Bruce Gairn, born 12 April 1872 in Edinburgh,14 was described as a telephone inspector in 1891.15 He died on 02 April 1941 at 47 Warrender Park Road.16 He married Annie P Gray in 1904, in Edinburgh.17
  • William Ernest Nash Gairn, born on 04 February 1874,18 was an apprentice clerk in 1891.19 He died in Edinburgh on 22 February 1957.20
  • Robert Gunn Gairn was born in Edinburgh in 1875. In 1911 he was living at Goodmayes, Ilford, Essex and his occupation was commercial traveller (in margarine).21 He died at Christchurch, Hampshire on 20 October 1947.22 In 1906, he married Elsie Mary Lumsden in Edinburgh.23
  • Vernor Rendall Gairn was born at 17 Cheyne Street on 12 June 1884.24 In 1910 he was described as a maker of artificial teeth.25 He died in Edinburgh on 06 December 1949.26 He married Margaret R McDonald in 1910.27
  • Frederick Alexander Gairn was born at No. 1 Malta Terrace on 20 September 1885.28 He died at East Kilbride on 16 August 1959 and was cremated in Edinburgh.29 He married Jessie Robertson Duff at Portobello in 1912.30
  • John Stanley Gairn was born at No. 1 Malta Terrace on 26 November 1887.31 He was a dentist when he enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps on 27 November 1915. He died of pneumonia on 28 October 1918 at Rawalpindi, India (now Pakistan).32
