James Forman Henderson

James Forman Henderson, who worked for the Bank of Scotland, lived at No. 4 from about 1855 to 1865.¹ James Henderson was born at Muckart, Perthshire and baptised there on 16 June 1811, son of Alexander Henderson and Grizel Forman.² He was a clerk and dealer of shares in Edinburgh when his estate was sequestered in July 1847.³ In the 1851 census his occupation was given as clerk in the Bank of Scotland.⁴ The 1881 census described him as a retired bank accountant.⁵ He died in Edinburgh on 10 October 1891 and was buried at St Cuthbert’s.⁶

James Henderson married Ann Edgar White, daughter of Robert White and Ann Edgar, on 15 July 1841, in Edinburgh.⁷ She was born in 1823 died 1884.⁸

Five of their children were recorded at No. 4 in the 1861 census:⁹

• Susan Edgar Henderson was born in Edinburgh on 13 February 1842 and died 16 June 1881.¹⁰
• Ann White Henderson was born in Edinburgh on 04 July 1843.¹¹ She married David Wyllie Keith at No. 4 Malta Terrace on 22 February 1864.¹² She died in London in 1904.¹³
• Henry Edgar Henderson was born 26 May 1848 and died 11 January 1878, in Edinburgh.¹⁴
• John Hutton Lawrence Henderson was born in Edinburgh 31 August 1855 and died at sea 15 September 1887.¹⁵
• Christian Edgar Henderson was born in 1860.¹⁶

Their youngest son, William Archer Henderson, was born at No. 4 Malta Terrace on 08 April 1862¹⁷ and died 04 March 1866.¹⁸

James Henderson’s mother-in-law, Anne Edgar or White, was also resident at No. 4 at the time of the 1861 census. She was born in Jamaica in 1800,¹⁹ the daughter of Alexander Edgar, owner of the Wedderly plantation in Trelawny, Jamaica, and his wife Ann Gordon. Anne Edgar or White died on 07 January 1877 at 5 Viewforth, Edinburgh.²⁰
