James Johnston lived at No. 1 from about 1873 to 1877.[1] He was a baker and confectioner with business premises at 6 Glanville Place. James Johnston was born on 22 May 1824, at Liberton, the son of farm worker James Johnston and his wife Catherine Cleghorn.[2] In 1851, when still living with his parents at Bonnyrigg, he was described as an apprentice mason.[3] By 1854 he was a baker in Peebles and about 1858 he moved into Edinburgh to operate a bakery business at 47 London Street. In the 1861 census, at this address, he was described as a master baker employing two men.[4] He left 47 London Street in 1866, the year his first wife died, and moved to Stirling. The 1871 census recorded him at Dalgleish House, Stirling with the occupation flour miller (master), employing six men.[5] He was listed in the Post Office Directory of 1870 as a miller, but the following year as a dairy operator with two premises.[6]
James Johnston returned to Edinburgh in 1873, taking up residence at No. 1 Malta Terrace and operating a bakery at 6 Glanville Place. The following year he had a second bakery at 4 Fairnington Place. He moved from Malta Terrace to 22 Dean Terrace in 1877, where he was recorded in the 1881 census, described as a master baker employing 4 men and 2 boys.[7] He died suddenly at Auchendinny, Glencorse on 14 August 1883.[8]
James Johnston’s first wife, Agnes Lamb, died aged 39 on 31 August 1866.[9] He married Ann Taylor at Stirling on 18 December 1867.[10] She was born on 20 June 1841 at Muiravonside, Stirling, daughter of Peter Taylor and Barbara Neill.[11] She continued in the bakery business after the death of her husband[12] and died at 22 Dean Terrace, Edinburgh on 10 April 1924.[13]
James Johnston and Ann Taylor had three daughters born in Stirling before moving to Malta Terrace, two daughters born there, and three more children born subsequently. The daughters who lived at Malta Terrace were:
-
- Jeanie (Jane) Lamb Johnston was born at Stirling on 09 April 1868.[14] In 1897, she married John Paris[15] who was described as living on his own means in 1901, when they lived at 11 Clarence Street.[16] He died in 1927[17] and she died two decades later on 02 June 1949 at 7 St Vincent Street, Edinburgh.[18]
- Margaret Fullerton Goldie Johnston was born at Stirling on 22 October 1869. She was a milliner in 1891.[19] She married Robert Hood James S.S.C. in 1900.[20] They had four children, but she died in childbirth at 25 Inverleith Terrace on 09 March 1910.[21] He died in 1944, having served as President of the S.S.C. Society and holding the post of Crown Agent.[22]
- Annie Taylor Johnston was born at Stirling on 12 March 1872.[23] Census records did not record her occupation, but she left an estate valued at £2,710. She died unmarried at 31 India Street on 19 January 1939.[24]
- Grace Bertram Johnston was born at No. 1 Malta Terrace on 05 April 1874[25] and died in 1936.[26] She married Ernest Edward Lawson in 1906.[27] He was a confectioner with four shops around Edinburgh and died in 1956.[28]
- Helen Cleghorn Johnston was born at No. 1 Malta Terrace on 28 October 1876.[29] She married John Graham in 1902[30] and died in 1946.[31]
One of James Johnston’s daughters by his first wife was recorded living with her father, step-mother and step-sisters throughout her adult life and is likely to have been at No. 1 Malta Terrace during their time there. Agnes Eckford Johnston was born at Cockpen, Midlothian on 30 January 1852.[32] She was described as a baker’s shopkeeper in census records. She died unmarried at 31 India Street on 15 October 1928.[33]
Margaret Taylor, Ann Taylor or Johnston’s sister, was recorded in census records living with the Johnston family before and after their residence in Malta Terrace and is likely to have been in the household at No. 1. Born at Muiravonside, Stirlingshire on 28 November 1853,[34] she was twelve years younger than Ann. She was unmarried and worked in the family’s bakery shop. She died on 12 June 1936.[35]
