James Lawson

James Lawson, W.S., lived at No. 4 from about 1845 to 1853.1 He was born in Edinburgh on 02 June 1794, eldest son of Peter Lawson, a seed merchant, and Patricia Grant.2 He was a legal apprentice to James Laidlaw and admitted W.S. on 19 June 1818.3 The census of 1851, when he was living at No. 4 Malta Terrace, records he was not then a practising W.S.4 In the census of 1861, he was recorded living at Lochend, Kirkliston, a retired W.S.5 He died on 27 February 1864.6

On 18 April 1826,7 James Lawson married Margaret Clark, youngest daughter of John Clark in Edinburgh,8 and Margaret Paterson, born 01 November 1797.9

Two of their children were recorded living at No. 4 Malta Terrace in the 1851 census: Peter Lawson, a medical student, and Jane Lawson, born in Edinburgh in 1832.10 Their grandson, Isaac Matthew D’Olier, aged 11 months was also present. He was born in Edinburgh on 24 April 1850, the son of Helen Campbell Lawson and John Rutherford D’Olier, an Irish lawyer,11, 12 and died in Dublin on 04 November 1913.13

Peter Campbell Lawson was a medical student in 1851 when he was recorded living at No. 4. He was born in Edinburgh on 18 July 182814 and died in 1857.15

Jane Clerk Lawson married the artist James Archer (1823-1904) on 01 August 1853.16 James Archer was an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy at the time of his marriage, becoming an academician in 1858.17 The family moved to London in the 1860s and were living at Gloucester Mansions, Kensington in 1891.18Jane Clerk Archer died the following year.19
