Janet Cleland

Janet Cleland was listed as householder at No. 7 from about 1845 until her death there on 14 April 1862. She was born Janet Walker on 5 September 1790, daughter of Robert Walker and Janet Walker; and married William Cleland on 4 September 1813. William Cleland, a merchant in Edinburgh died in 1836, and his widow Janet Cleland was described in the censuses (1841, 1851, 1861) as either of independent means or an annuitant.

Some of the children of William Cleland and Janet Walker lived at No. 7 during the time their mother was there. William Cleland, share-broker, is listed in the 1845/46 directory The eldest, John Cleland (born 21 May 1814) was described as an unemployed clerk in 1861. Janet Cleland (born 29 June 1816) was also there in 1861, as were Mary Anne Cleland (born 1828) and the youngest, Jemima Walker Cleland (born on 19 July 1832).

After her death, The Misses Cleland were listed as residents until 1868. These were most probably Mary Ann Cleland and Jemima Cleland, who married James Erskine Dick, of Glasgow, at No. 7 Malta Terrace, on 21 October 1864.
