John Hill, a builder, and his family were resident at No. 1 between 1869 and 1881.1 This was also the address of his business, John Hill & Sons. John Hill was born at Lasswade in 1815,2 son of Archibald Hill and Marion Paris. In 1841 he was described as a joiner.3 When the 1851 census was taken he was a master builder and wright living at Juniper Green, employing eight men.4 In the mid-1850s he moved into the centre Edinburgh, living at several addresses before taking up residence at No. 1 Malta Terrace. By 1871 his business had expanded to employ 22 people (six masons, four labourers, eight joiners and four boys).5 The family were enumerated at No. 1 Malta Terrace for the census on 03 April 1881 but soon moved to Rosehall Terrace (now Dalkeith Road),6 before returning to Hillmount, Juniper Green around the turn of the century. John Hill died there on 17 October 1901.7
On 28 November 1841 John Hill married Isabella Keay Dewar.8 She was born at Crieff, Perthshire on 09 June 1821, daughter of Peter Dewar and Catherine Nesbit.9 She died at Crieff on 01 July 1904.10 Their eight children were born before the family resided at No. 1 Malta Terrace. The family’s adherence to the Free Church may explain the absence of the children’s baptism records though all were recorded living at No. 1 in censuses.
