John Logan

John Logan and his family were recorded at Malta House in the census taken on 30 March 1851.1 Later that year the family moved to No. 6 Malta Terrace2 and remained there until 1855.3 John Logan, a commission agent in the grain trade, was born at Hutton, Berwickshire and baptised there on 17 April 1787, son of John Logan in New Edrom and Elizabeth Dodds.4 On leaving Malta Terrace he moved to 9 West Claremont Street, where he died on 06 April 1866.5

John Logan married Isabella Logan on 04 June 1811, at Coldingham.6 She was the daughter of Lieutenant David Logan and Ann Hall, baptised at Berwick-upon-Tweed on 06 April 1794.7 She was living in Berwick in 1871,8 and died on 15 October 1877.9

Five of John Logan’s children, all unmarried, were living at Malta House in 1851 and are likely to have moved to No. 6 with their parents.

  • John Logan was born on 30 June 1815 and baptised at Oldhamstocks on 19 July 1815.10 Aged 35, he was unmarried in 1851, but the census did not record an occupation.11
  • Richard Logan was born on 31 March 1823 and baptised at Oldhamstocks on 06 May 1823. His occupation was recorded as chemist in 1851.12 He married Helen Martine at 31 Scotland Street on 14 April 1859,13 and died there on 01 June 1862.14
  • Elizabeth Dods Logan was baptised at Oldhamstocks, East Lothian on 06 October 1828.15 She married George Logan Esq., farmer at Hume Hall, Berwickshire on 28 April 1857, at 5 West Claremont Street, Edinburgh.16 She died on 01 February 1904.17
  • Isabella Wilhelmina Hall Logan was born about 1830, in Oldhamstocks, East Lothian.18 She married John Chirnside, who was a surgeon living in Saxe Coburg Place when he died in 1869.19 She lived in Albany Street between 1886 and 1901,20 and died on 13 December 1922 at 1 Blackford Road, Edinburgh.21
  • Mary Logan was born about 1834, at Oldhamstocks, East Lothian.22
