John Wilson Pillans lived briefly at No. 3 in 1841 and 1842. He and his family were recorded there in the census on 06 June 1841,[1] and he was listed there in the directory for 1841-42. He was at 09 Salisbury Place in 1842-43, before moving to 17 George Square, where the family were recorded in the 1851 census.[2]
He was born 19 March 1803 and baptised at South Leith on 12 April 1803, son of James Pillans and Ann Wilson.[3] His occupation was recorded as ‘Independent’ in the 1841 census, and as house proprietor and fund holder in the 1861 census, when he was living in Kensington, London.[4] His stock and share broking business in Edinburgh, in partnership with David Hume, went into sequestration in July 1849.[5] In 1852 he was described as Secretary of the English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank,[6] and in 1862 as a banker for the Turin and Savona Railway Company.[7] He died In Dublin after a long illness on 17 March 1872.[8]
John Wilson Pillans married Jane Davidson Broughton at Trieste (Leghorn) on 22 October 1833.[9] She was born in 1811, on St Helena, where her father, Edward Swift Broughton, was Lieutenant Governor. She died 11 November 1884.[10]
Three of their eight children were recorded at No. 3 Malta Terrace in the 1841 census:

- Barbara Ann Pillans, the eldest, was born in Trieste on 10 December 1835. She married John Kinahan[11] and died in London on 05 September 1895.
- Louisa Henrietta Frances Pillans was born 06 September 1838, in Trieste. She married Alphonso Busby and died in London in 1904.
- Edward Broughton Pillans was born in Yorkshire in 1840,[12] and died at St Austell, Cornwall in 1889.[13]
