Joseph Martin

Joseph Martin, a paymaster in the Royal Navy, was listed at No. 3 in 1863/64. The previous year he was at Trinity Lodge, Edinburgh and the following year, 1864/65, he does not appear in the Edinburgh PO Directory. In 1871, Joseph Martin’s family were resident at Saltash, Cornwall and he was recorded in the census on board HMS Monarch.

Joseph Martin was born at Saltash on 6 March 1821, son of Joseph Martin and Catherine Harriet Derisley. He joined the Royal Navy and was appointed paymaster in 1843, eventually reaching the rank of paymaster-in-chief. He died at Newton Abbot, Devon on 26 April 1895.

On 10 July 1850, Joseph Martin married Laura Malfitre Bisson Cook (1829-1903), daughter of another Royal Navy paymaster. They had seven children, including Horace Martin who was born at No. 3 Malta Terrace on 27 January 1864. He became a clerk in the office of the Crown Agents for the Colonies.

The other children were: Laura Doswell Martin (1851-1931), Henry Cutfield Martin (1852-1932), Frances Maud Martin (1855-1930), Joseph John Henry Martin (1858-1913) and Arthur Derisley Martin (1862-).
