Margaret Milne

Margaret Milne and three of her children occupied a ground floor apartment at No. 1 when the 1891 census was recorded.¹ She was born Margaret Archibald on 17 February 1831, at Urquhart, Moray, daughter of John Archibald and Margaret Allan.² She married John Milne, a mason, on 21 December 1850, at Urquhart, Moray.³ Margaret Archibald or Milne died at Morningside, Edinburgh in 1914.⁴

The three children of John Milne and Margaret Archibald living at No. 1 in 1891 were all adult and unmarried. They were:

• • Barbara Milne, a dressmaker in 1891, was born 09 January 1855, at Urquhart.⁵ She was married and widowed twice before 1911, when she applied for poor relief at Shotts, Lanarkshire.⁶ She was a greengrocer living at 7 Viewforth Square in 1921⁷ and died at Leith in 1940.⁸
  • Allan Milne, a joiner, was born 24 August 1862, at Elgin.⁹ He died on 19 July 1925 at 23 West Richmond Street, Edinburgh.¹⁰ He had been resident at this address since 1897 under the surname Richardson.¹¹ Mary Richardson was named on his death registration as his wife, but there is no record of a marriage.
  • Maggie Isabella Milne, also known as Mabel, was born at Elgin in 1875.¹² She was a compositor in 1891,¹³ a factory worker in 1901¹⁴ and a shop assistant in 1921.¹⁵ She died unmarried at Edinburgh on 15 May 1933.¹⁶

In 1891, Margaret Milne also had two lodgers her three-roomed apartment at No. 1 Malta Terrace. Both were from Moray and may have been previously known to the family. James Fraser, was a maltman, who was born at Elgin, Moray on 30 November 1865, son of James Fraser, farm overseer, and Margaret Dean.¹⁷ The second lodger was John Hendry, a labourer, born at Speymouth, Moray on 20 January 1867 son of labourer Alexander Hendry and his wife Barbara Shand.¹⁸
