Mrs Margaret Burn and family lived at No. 2 Malta Terrace between 1870 and 1874.1 She was the widow of Thomas Burn, a solicitor and notary public in Bishop Wearmouth, Durham who died aged 47 on 27 August 1862.2
Margaret Balfour Wright was born in Edinburgh on 24 March 1819, daughter of Alexander Wright of St Catherine’s, Liberton and his wife Margaret Balfour.3 Alexander Wright was a seedsman and merchant. She married Thomas Burn on 02 June 1846 at Liberton, Midlothian.4 He was a native of Bishop Wearmouth, Durham, where the couple lived for many years. After her husband’s death Margaret Burn returned to Edinburgh. She died on 21 June 1889 at 7 Cambridge Street, Edinburgh.5
In 1871, Mrs Margaret Burn had five of her children living with her at No. 2. The eldest, Frances Home Burn was born in 1849 at Bishop Wearmouth, Durham.6 In 1871 she was a described as a governess.7 She was recorded in 1891 living on private means at 2 Keir Street.8 Her sister Margaret McIntyre Burn also lived there in 1892.9 By 1896, she and her sister Margaret were living at 17 Torphichen Street10 where Frances died on 28 January 1905.11
Margaret Mcintyre Burn was born in 1854 and baptised at Bishop Wearmouth, Durham on 27 January 1854.12 She was recorded living with her widowed mother in Edinburgh in 1881,13 and with her sister Frances in 1892.14 In 1901 she was living in Torphichen Street15 before moving after 1905 to 52 Haymarket Terrace. She died at Hamilton House, Joppa, Edinburgh on 18 August 1931.16
Thomas Malcolm Burn was baptised at Bishop Wearmouth, Durham on 06 December 1855.17 In 1871, when living at No. 2 Malta Terrace, he was a wine merchant’s apprentice.18 He died at on 12 April 1936 at Mickleton, Yorkshire.19
John Henry Burn was born in 1859 and was a schoolboy, aged 12, when the 1871 census was taken.20 In the next census, 1881, he was described as a student of theology at the University of Durham.21 In 1885 he graduated Bachelor of Divinity. He was a deacon in the episcopal church by 1881 and a priest the following year. He became rector at St Drostan’s, Old Deer, Aberdeenshire in 1886, and then priest in charge at Ballater in 1902. In that year he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 1914 he was appointed vicar at Hundon, Suffolk. He published numerous sermons, articles and papers.22 He died at Whatfield Rectory, Suffolk on 26 July 1937.23
John Henry Burn married his cousin Edith Catherine Wright in London on 05 April 1883.24 She was the daughter of Henry Charles William Wright and Catherine Sarah Burn, sister of Thomas Burn, and born in Edinburgh on 26 June 1850.25 Her first husband, Frank Hatton, died in London in 1879.26 She died in Suffolk on 12 October 1936.27
The youngest child of Thomas Burn and Margaret B. Wright, Mary Emilia Sarah Burn, was born in 186228 and baptised 19 March 1862 at Bishop Wearmouth, Durham.29 She was living at 7 Cambridge Street, Edinburgh when she died in Edinburgh on 27 July 1890.30
