The Cleland family occupied No. 7 for almost twenty-five years, between 1843 and 1867.1 Mrs William Cleland was the listed householder from 1843 until her death there on 12 April 1862.2 Though some directories in the 1840s listed Mrs Helen Cleland at No. 7, she was in fact Mrs Janet Cleland, widow of William Cleland, a merchant in Edinburgh. Her daughters continued to occupy No. 7 until 1867.3
Mrs Cleland was born Janet Walker on 05 September 1790, in Edinburgh, daughter of Robert Walker, a printer, and his wife Janet Walker.4 She married William Cleland, an ironmonger, on 04 September 18135 and was widowed on 12 March 1835 when William Cleland died of consumption aged 65 years.6
Janet Walker and William Cleland had ten children.7 Six of their children are known to have lived at No. 7:

- John Cleland, listed at No. 7 in the 1851 census, aged 36, was born in Edinburgh on 21 May 1814.8 He was an unemployed clerk at the time of the census.9
- Janet Cleland, listed at No. 7 in the 1851 census, was born on 04 July 1816.10 In 1891, together with her sister Mary Ann, she was letting apartments and living at 23 Royal Crescent.11 She died unmarried on 20 October 1892 at 4 Henderson Row, Edinburgh.12
- Margaret Guthrie Cleland, listed at No. 7 in the 1851 census, was born on 30 September 1818.13 She died at No. 7 on 23 December 1857.14
- William Cleland was baptised at Edinburgh on 03 November 1822.15 He was listed at No. 7 in the 1845-46 Post Office Directory, occupation share-broker.16 In 1846-47 he was employed by the North of Scotland Insurance Company.17 He moved to London, where he married Annie Lomas in 1856.18 He died at 41 Vincent Square, Westminster on 07 March 1887.19
- Mary Ann Haig Cleland was baptised at Edinburgh on 25 July 1828. She was recorded living at No. 7 in the censuses of 1851 and 1861 and was one of the ‘Misses Cleland’ listed at there until 1867. In 1881, she and her sister Janet were operating a lodging house in Mansion House Road.20 In 1891 they were at 23 Royal Crescent, letting apartments.21 She died on 04 September 1900, at 6 Royal Crescent, Edinburgh.22
- Jemima Walker Cleland was born in Edinburgh on 19 July 1832.23 She married at 7 Malta Terrace, on the 21 October 1864, James Erskine Dick, a Glasgow shipping clerk.24 She died in Glasgow on 31 July 1892.25
