Mrs Hogg was resident at No. 9 for about two years between 1839 and 1841.1 This appears to have been the Mrs Hogg who was listed in the PO Directory at 14 St Bernard’s Crescent in 1841-422 and enumerated there when the census was taken on 06 June 1841.3 She was Margaret Phillips, widow of James Hogg, “The Ettrick Shepherd.”
Margaret Phillips was born at Ruthwell, Dumfriesshire about 1790, the daughter of farmer Peter Phillips and Janet Carruthers.4 She married James Hogg, who was almost 20 years her senior, at Kelso on 28 April 1820.5 According to Rev. Charles Rogers, she was devoted to her husband’s comfort and the proper upbringing of her children.6 “She was a zealous adherent of the Free Church, and was much respected for her piety and unostentatious benevolence.”7 After James Hogg’s death on 20 November 1835,8 she lived in Edinburgh for nearly 18 years.9 She died at Linlithgow on 15 November 1870.10
