Isabella B Macfarlan

Isabella Macfarlan, widow of Walter MacFarlan, lived at No. 7 with her family from about 1881 to 1892.1 The post office directories listed her as Mrs MacFarlan. She was born Isabella Burnett Aitchison, on 18 March 1849, daughter of James Aitchison and Jane Swan.2 The widowed Jane Swan or Aitchison lived at No. 5 between 1867 and 1883. Isabella Macfarlan moved to 4 Saxe-Coburg Place where she died on 15 October 1911.3

Isabella Aitchison married Walter MacFarlan on 27 September 1870, in Edinburgh,4 and the couple moved to Yorkshire. In 1871, Walter MacFarlan, a land agent, and Isabella, were resident at Crigglestone, Yorkshire.5 He died at Darlington, Durham on 23 February 1878.6

Their four children were born in England and all four were recorded living with their mother at No. 7 in 1881. The eldest, Walter MacFarlan was born on 14 July 1871 and baptised the following day at Chapelthorpe, Yorkshire.7 He was living with his mother in 1901, unmarried and a lawyer’s clerk.8

Amy Rooke Macfarlan, the eldest daughter, was born on 18 January 1873 and baptised at Chapelthorpe on 18 May 1873.9 She married, by declaration, Alexander, Baron von Gerlach in Glasgow on 12 April 1906.10 Their daughter Eleanor was born the following month at 4 Saxe-Coburg Place, Edinburgh.11

The younger daughter, Marjorie MacFarlan was born on 09 May 1874 and baptised at Chapelthorpe, Yorkshire on 28 June 1874.12 She was unmarried and lived with her mother until the latter’s death in 1911.13

The youngest, Donald William MacFarlan was born at Darlington, Durham and baptised there on 29 March 1876.14 He was recorded, aged 15, in his mother’s household at 4 Saxe-Coburg Place in the 1891 census.15 He appears to have emigrated to Australia in 1899,16 and died in New Zealand in 1950.17
