Jane Aitchison was resident at No. 5 from about 1868 to 1883. She was born at Earlston, Berwickshire c.1827, the daughter of Robert Swan, land steward, and Isabella Burnett. Jane Swan married James Aitchison on 27 March 1848, in Edinburgh. James Aitchison was born at Lilliesleaf in 1808, and died about 1870. His widow died on 8 March 1912.
Jane Aitchison was a draper, with business premises at 38 Queen Street. In the 1881 census she was described as a retired draper and milliner. In 1901, living at 83 Great King Street, she was a boardinghouse keeper.
Two sons of Jane Swan and James Aitchison were living at No. 5 in 1871. William Aitchison (born 20 October 1850) was a commercial clerk, and Robert Swan Aitchison (born 7 June 1854) was a an apprentice flour miller. Robert Aitchison was still at No. 5 in 1881, when he was a medical student. He was later a general medical practitioner.
