Mrs Bethia McFarquhar

Mrs M’Farquhar was listed at No. 3 between 1835 and 1838,1 when she moved to 18 Fettes Row. Bethia Brown was born at Dunsyre, Lanarkshire on 17 May 1765, and was the daughter of Lawrence Brown of Edmonston, Biggar, and his wife Anna Lawson.2 She died at 18 Fettes Row on 16 February 1846.3

She married John McFarquhar, W.S., at Edinburgh on 11 October 1793.4 He died on 10 June 1817,5 shortly after taking up residence in Albany Street.6

Their four unmarried adult daughters, Ann, Elizabeth, Janet and Frances, were listed living with their widowed mother at Fettes Row in 18417 and likely also lived with her at No. 3 Malta Terrace. Ann Lawson M’Farquhar born on 20 March 1795, at Edinburgh),8 and died at 18 Fettes Row on 24 May 1857.9 Elizabeth M’Farquhar was born on 29 June 1801,10 and died at 18 Fettes Row on 09 March 1871.11 Janet M’Farquhar was born on 31 October 180212 and died at Rothesay, Bute on 24 September 1848.13 The youngest, Frances Hay M’Farquhar was born on 11 November 180414 and died at 18 Fettes Row in 1869.15
