Euphemia Turnbull

Mrs Turnbull occupied No. 7 from 1839 to 1843.¹ She was the widow of John Turnbull, the City Chamberlain, who died suddenly on 05 October 1838.² She was born Euphemia Mackie, on 31 August 1783, at Ormiston, East Lothian, daughter of William Mackie and Agnes Lightbody.³ She was at No. 7 Malta Terrace when the 1841 census was taken along with four of her children. She was described as ‘Independent.’⁴ She died on 28 August 1864 at 162 Pleasance.⁵

Euphemia Mackie married John Turnbull on 03 October 1805.⁶ Four of their many children are known to have lived at No.7:

• • Agnes Turnbull, who was born in Edinburgh on 22 August 1808,⁷ was living at 8 Elm Row in 1851 when she was described as a Berlin wool dealer, employing a shopwoman and an apprentice.⁸ She died unmarried on 10 January 1886.⁹
  • John Turnbull, born in Edinburgh on 16 April 1818,¹⁰ was a merchant in 1841 living in his mother’s household at No. 7.¹¹ He died on 10 November 1865.¹²
  • William Mackie Turnbull was born in Edinburgh on 27 May 1820.¹³ He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1841 when his home address was given as No. 7 Malta Terrace.¹⁴ He was described as a surgeon in the census that year.¹⁵ He emigrated to Australia and married Euphemia Turnbull in 1851, at Melbourne.¹⁶ He died of consumption at Melbourne on 03 October 1867.¹⁷
  • Elizabeth (or Eliza) Turnbull was born in Edinburgh on 27 November 1822¹⁸ and recorded at No. 7 in the 1841 census.¹⁹
