Commander Peter Burn, R.N. and his nephew Peter Burn junior were listed at No. 6 in 1849-1850.[1] They were both at 1 London Street before this.[2] However, Commander Burn died on 12 May 1849, aged 84, at 1 London Street[3] and was not a resident of Malta Terrace for long. His nephew was living in Malta Terrace in July 1849[4] but was back at 1 London Street before the end of March 1851.[5]
Peter Burn senior was born at Aberlady, East Lothian on 19 November 1765, son of Hugh Burn and Grizzel Forest.[6] He served in the Royal Navy between 1794 and 1814.[7] In the 1841 census he was described as “Master Royal Navy H P” (i.e. Half Pay), living at 1 London Street.[8]
Peter Burn junior was born in Glasgow 02 April 1824, son of George Burn, a coach proprietor, and his wife Rebecca Scott.[9] George Burn, a brother of Peter Burn senior, was born at Aberlady in 1770[10] and died in Glasgow 1832,[11] when Peter Burn junior was eight years’ old. In 1841, Peter Burn junior was an apprentice accountant living with his uncle in London Street, Edinburgh.[12] He was described as a proprietor of houses in the 1851 census,[13] and in the 1861 census when he was living in Peebles with his unmarried sister Helen.[14] Peter Burn was admitted to Gartnavel Royal Lunatic Asylum on 25 December 1863,[15] and died there on 16 January 1869. The cause of death was recorded as a disease of the brain complicated by epilepsy.[16]
Peter Burn junior’s sisters, Margaret Scott Burn and Helen Burn, were the beneficiaries of his will.[17] They were recorded in his household in the 1851 census, at 1 London Street,[18] and may have lived with him at No. 6. The sisters were both born in Glasgow, Margaret Scott Burn about 1823 and Helen Burn about 1826. They both died in 1890 at the Glasgow home of their brother-in-law, Peter T. Young, a writer, Helen on 16 February 1890[19] and Margaret on 15 September 1890.[20]
