Robert Lunn and his family lived at No. 4 from 1896 to 1929.1 Robert Hume Lunn was a plumber and gasfitter, with business premises at 3 Deanhaugh Street.2 He was born about 1855 in Edinburgh, son of James Lunn, a joiner, and Mary McDougall.3 Aged 16, he was described as a plumber in the 1871 census.4 The 1881 census records that he was a plumber employing one boy.5 He died at Portobello on 29 January 1938.6

Robert Lunn married Mary Anne Courtneidge on 25 April 1879 at Stockbridge, Edinburgh.7 She was born 28 September 1857 in Glasgow, the daughter of Charles Courtneidge, a mate in the merchant navy, and Jane Wight.8 She died at Portobello on 13 July 1944.9

All seven of Robert Lunn and Mary Ann Courtneidge’s children were recorded living at No. 4 Malta Terrace in the 1901 census.10 The youngest two were born when the family was living there. They were:

    • Robert James Lunn was born in Edinburgh in 1880.11 He was a plumber in 1901,12 probably working with his father. He emigrated to Canada and died 14 May 1930.13
    • Charles Courtneidge Lunn was born in 1881.14 He was a plumber in 1901.15 He served as a sapper and later a lieutenant in the Royal Engineers during the First World War16 and died at Bournemouth in 1945.17 He married Flora Scott in 1915.18 They divorced in 1931.19
    • James MacDougall Lunn was born in 1883. His occupation was given as dentist in the 1911 census,20 and was registered on 15 June 1922 under the Dentists Act (1921).21 He died at Moriningside, Edinburgh in 1967.22
    • Stuart Lunn was born in Edinburgh on 03 June 1886. He graduated L.D.S. R.C.S.Edin. on 09 January 1909 and practiced dentistry in Edinburgh and London.23 He was at No. 2 Malta Terrace between 1911 and 1913.24 He died in Edinburgh in 1974.25
    • Jane Helen Lunn was born in 1895.26 She married Thomas F. Wilson in 193427 and died in 1968.28
    • John Thompson Lunn was born in 189729 and died in Edinburgh on 14 May 1967.30

Mary Ann Courtneidge Lunn was born in 1899 in Edinburgh31 and died there in 1990.32
