Robert Somerville

Robert Somerville, bookseller and stationer, lived at No. 7 from 1892 to 1896. The business premises of R & H Somerville were at 9 and 10 Spring Gardens. Robert Somerville was born at Newlands, Peebles on 17 May 1831, son of Hugh Somerville and Ann Laidlaw. Hugh Somerville and his family had moved to Portobello, Edinburgh by 1851. Robert Somerville married his first wife, Elizabeth Hodge, on 25 November 1852, at Leith. She was born at Leith about 1825 and died on 13 February 1870.

Robert Somerville was married a second time to Helen Anderson (born about 1842), widow of James C Hamilton. Her son, George Hamilton, lived with them at No. 7 Malta Terrace and afterwards, until at least 1901.
