Thomas S Melville

Thomas Scott Melville was at No. 4 in 1895-96, before moving next door to No. 5 where he remained until 1907.¹ He was born in Glasgow on 03 March 1851,² son of Thomas Melville, cap and hat manufacturer, and Jane Scott.³ His father died soon after and his mother remarried in 1855, to Robert Kennedy Mitchell.⁴ His occupation was recorded in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses as bank clerk.⁵ Latterly, he worked at the head office of the Commercial Bank.⁶ He died in Musselburgh on 30 July 1908.⁷

In 1878, in Birkenhead, Cheshire Thomas Scott Melville married Maria Wemyss.⁸ She was born at Birkenhead, Cheshire and baptised there on 27 January 1856,⁹ daughter of James Wemyss and Maria Allan.¹⁰ Maria Wemyss or Melville remarried in 1912, marrying Adam Boulton, a coal exporter, at Eastbourne, Sussex.¹¹ She was widowed a second time and died at Dollar, Clackmannanshire on 14 February 1930.¹²

Thomas Scott Melville and Maria Wemyss had two children living with them in Malta Terrace, Jane Scott Melville(born at Corstorphine on 03 May 1881¹³ and died at Alloa in 1976¹⁴) and John Wemyss Melville (born at Corstorphine in 1885¹⁵ and died in Durban, South Africa in 1959¹⁶).
