Thomas Wishart

Thomas Wishart and his family lived at No. 4 between 1869 and 1871.¹ He was born in 1830 at Kirkcaldy, Fife, son of James Wishart, a shoemaker, and Violet Dick.² He began his working life as a shoemaker,³ but in the 1861 census his occupation was given as warehouseman in the flint glass trade.⁴ Ten years later, living at No. 4 Malta Terrace, he was a shopman in the same trade.⁵ The family moved to Glasgow where Thomas Wishart was a glass and china salesman.⁶ He died at Cathcart, Lanarkshire in 1913.⁷

Thomas Wishart married Mary Anne Taylor at Stirling on 18 September 1865.⁸ She was born in Glasgow in 1836, the daughter of John Taylor, a portrait painter, and Margaret Robb. She died at 22 Crown Street, Glasgow on 23 December 1901.⁹

Thomas Wishart and Mary Ann Taylor had two children before moving to No. 4 Malta Terrace: Mary Wishart, born in 14 August 1866,¹⁰ and Violet Wishart, born 27 April 1868.¹¹  Their third child was James Wishart, born 21 January 1870 at No. 4 Malta Terrace.¹²

Thomas Wishart’s father, James Wishart, was recorded at No. 4 in the 1871 census.¹³ He was born at Colinsburgh, Fife in 1794, son of Thomas Wishart and Christian Leetch.¹⁴ He married Violet Dick on 04 May 1823 in Edinburgh,¹⁵ where he was a shoemaker. His wife died in 1864.¹⁶ He died in Dundee in 1882.¹⁷
