William Napier, a music teacher, lived with his family at No. 4 from about 1837 to 1844.1 Born in Midlothian about 1800,2 he was listed in directories as a teacher of music and, in the 1841 census, his occupation was given as professor of music.3 William Napier was listed a professor of music in Glasgow, 1847-1850.4 He died at 99 Douglas Street, Glasgow on 28 December 1850.5
William Napier married Elizabeth Richardson on 19 May 1818, at Edinburgh.6 She was born at Edrom, Berwickshire, baptised there on 11 January 1796, the daughter of John Richardson and Janet Manson.7 She died on 27 October 1855 at 99 Douglas Street, Glasgow.8
Eight children of William Napier and Elizabeth Richardson, one son and seven daughters, were recorded at No. 4 Malta Terrace in the 1841 census.9 The eldest was Sophia Napier, who was born in Edinburgh on 03 March 1819.10 She was a piano and singing teacher in Glasgow before she married11, 12 William McKenzie, a noted ophthalmic surgeon, on 12 December 1854.13 She died in Glasgow on 20 September 1902.14
John Manson Napier was born on 24 May 1823 in Edinburgh.15 He was described as a wholesale grocer when he married Jessie Campbell on 09 June 1858, at Glasgow.16 In 1881, when he was living at Argyll Lodge, Dunoon, his occupation was recorded as retired tea merchant.17 He died at 2 Great George Street, Hillhead, Partick on 05 January 1882.18
The second daughter, Elizabeth Clark Napier, known as Eliza, was born about 1828.19 She married Charles John Small, a coffee and spice merchant, in Glasgow on 24 May 1846.20 She was widowed in 1867,21 lived for many years at Ibroxholm, Glasgow and died in 1910.22
Wilhelmina (Mina) Napier was born in Edinburgh about 1839. She was recorded at No. 4 Malta Terrace in the 1841 census, aged 3,23 and in the 1851 census her age was given as 11.24 In the 1861 census she was described as a visitor in the household of her sister Eliza Small at Cessnock Road, Govan.25 In 1871 she was a governess living with her sister Mary at 6 Clarendon Place, Great Western Road, Glasgow;26 in 1881 she was an annuitant, in the household of her brother John; and in 1891 she was again living with her sister Mary, at 2 Great George Street, Govan. 27 Wilhelmina Napier died unmarried in 1896.28
Mary Anne Napier was born in Edinburgh on 25 July 1837.29 In 1851, she was described as a governess, living with her widowed mother and siblings.30 She was a music teacher, at 6 Clarendon Place, Maryhill, Glasgow in 1871, living with her sister Williamina.31 She was again recorded living with Williamina in 1891, living on private means at 2 Great George Street, Govan.32 In 188133 and 190134 she was recorded in her sister Sophia’s household. She died on 18 September 1907.35
Helen Napier was born in Edinburgh about 1834. She was recorded at No. 4 Malta Terrace aged 7 in 1841.36 Ten years later, aged 17 and living with her widowed mother, her occupation was governess.37
Charlotte Napier was born in Edinburgh about 1836. She was recorded in the 1841 census at No. 4 Malta Terrace, aged 5 years38 and in the 1851 census, in Glasgow, a scholar, aged 14.39
The youngest child of William Napier and Elizabeth Richardson was Marion Taylor Napier, born 27 January 1839, when the family were living at No. 4 Malta Terrace.40 In 1861 she was recorded in the household of her sister, Sophia McKenzie, in Govan. She married James Sdeward or Stewart, an accountant in 1868,41 and died in childbirth 03 March 1876 at 29 Hamilton Park Terrace, Partick.42
