Henry William Baynes

Henry William Baynes, who purchased the Malta estate in 1817,1 was a central figure in the creation of Malta Terrace, though little is known about him. His first appearance in the Edinburgh directory was in 1815, when he was at St Bernard’s Place, Stockbridge. In 1816 and 1817 he was listed at Malta, Stockbridge; in 1818 at Ann Street and in 1819 at 11 Raeburn Place.2 In 1820 he was listed at Malta House, his last appearance in an Edinburgh directory.3

In 1823 he was at Sauchie House near Stirling4 and in Crieff, Perthshire in 1833.5 He then disappears from the record, possible due to his bankruptcy in 1829 which initiated several years’ litigation arising from his unpaid loan from Donald Cameron for the purchase of the Malta estate.
