Hugh J Baird and his brother Robert G Baird were listed at No. 8 in the post office directory of 1845/46. They moved to Malta Terrace from 2 Grove Street, but in 1841 and again in 1851 were living at Jocks Lodge. Hugh James Baird was an accountant and stockbroker, born in Russia and baptised at the British chaplaincy in St Petersburg on 8 July 1793. His parents were James Baird (born 1760) and Margaret Gunning. He died in South Leith on 27 September 1867.
On 22 July 1821, at Edinburgh, Hugh Baird married Margaret Mackay, daughter of Henry Mackay. For many years the couple lived with their brother and their sister Margaret, at different addresses including, probably, No. 8 Malta Terrace.
