The Rose family

David Rose, a prominent Edinburgh builder, took up residence at No. 8 in 19321 and lived there until his death on 25 February 1960.2 He was born on 26 August 1880, at 16 Cumberland Street, son of John Rose, a joiner, and Mary Clinkscales Bell.3 His maternal grandfather was David Bell, at one time chairman of the Edinburgh Co-operative Building Company Ltd. which built the Stockbridge Colonies.4 Bell & Rose builders, managed by David Rose and his brother William A. Rose, operated from premises in Henderson Place. When William Rose died in 1945, David Rose managed the company with his nephew John H. Rose.5

David Rose married Elizabeth Aiken Duguid on 02 January 1913, at St James’s Episcopal Church, Inverleith.6 Elizabeth Aiken Duguid was born on 24 April 1885, daughter of John Duguid, a gardener, and Mary Ann Norwell.7 At the time of her marriage in 1913 she was described as an outfitter’s saleswoman and living at 18 Clarence Street.8 She was recorded in the 1901 census as a lodger at this address.9 Elizabeth remained at No. 8 for at least five years after her husband’s death in 1960,10 and died in 1971.11

David Rose and Elizabeth Aiken Duguid had two daughters, who would have been in their teens when the family moved to No. 8 Malta Terrace. The elder, Dorothy Mary Rose, was born in 1914.12 She married William Thomson Scott, then a lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps, in Edinburgh on 04 August 1944.13 She died at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh on 08 April 1987.14

The younger daughter was Elizabeth Margaret Rose, born on 04 April 1916.15 She was educated at George Watson’s Ladies College and studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduating M.B., Ch.B. in 1938.16 She worked for a decade in hospitals in England, specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology, becoming a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1947. Following her return to Scotland, she was appointed a consultant at Stirling Royal Infirmary in the early 1950s. She was a highly respected consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, played a key role in establishing Brook Advisory Centres in Scotland, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1966 through recognition by her peers. Elizabeth Margaret Rose died at Bridge of Allan, aged 94, on 01 April 2011.17
