John Roberts Baillie lived at No. 9 between 1914 and 1936.[1] He was born at Bathgate on 02 October 1866, son of Thomas Baillie, a candlemaker, and his wife Agnes Roberts.[2] In the 1881 Census, when he was 14 years old, he was described as a stationer’s clerk.[3] He worked for the West Lothian Courier and as well as doing some reporting was in charge of the clerical department.[4] He left Bathgate about 1894 to take charge of the clerical staff of the Perthshire Constitutional, and in 1901 was living in Dunkeld Road, Perth.[5] He later moved to Edinburgh to manage the Riverside Press[6] and was living in Dunedin Street in 1911.[7] About 1920 he formed his own printing company, The Dunedin Press, with premises in Thistle Street.[8] He died at No. 9 Malta Terrace on 18 March 1936.[9]
John Roberts Baillie married Margaret Grindlay Gillies at Bathgate on 25 February 1885.[10] Their golden wedding anniversary in 1935 was reported in the Edinburgh Evening News, Mr Baillie being well-known in the Edinburgh printing trade.[11] Margaret Grindley Gillies was born at Bathgate on 08 January 1866, daughter of George Gillies, a brick maker, and his wife Margaret Robertson.[12] She died at No. 9 Malta Terrace on 21 March 1947.[13]
John Roberts Baillie and Margaret Grindley Gillies had two sons, born almost twenty years apart. Both were listed at No. 9 in the Electoral Register at least once.
John George Gillies Baillie was born at Perth on 17 November 1907.[14] He married Florence May Pirie in 1927.[15] They were both listed at No. 9 in Electoral Registers from 1935 to 1955.[16] He died on 08 March 1966.[17]
Florence May Pirie was born at Lossiemouth, Moray on 10 April 1906, daughter of William Pirie, Colour Sergeant in the Seaforth Highlanders, and Finas Sophia Waters.[18] She died in Edinburgh in 1984.[19] John G. G. Baillie and Florence Pirie had two sons who lived at No. 9.
- John Robert Baillie was born in Edinburgh in 1928[20] and was listed at No. 9 in the 1950 Electoral Register.[21] He married Maureen Lang at Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan in 1956[22] and died in Oxfordshire in 2017.[23]
- Ronald George Baillie, son of John G.G. Baillie and Florence Pirie, was born in Edinburgh in 1929.[24] He was listed at No. 9 in the 1955 Electoral Register. He was a flying officer in the R.A.F., stationed at Horsham St Faith, Norfolk, when he died after a mid-air collision on 03 January 1957.[25]
John R. Baillie’s much older brother Thomas Baillie and his wife Marie were listed in the Electoral Register at No. 9 in 1925-26. Thomas Baillie was born at Bathgate on 11 July 1886.[26] He was a printer’s compositor in 1901.[27] He died at Blackhall, Edinburgh on 28 November 1962.[28] Thomas Baillie married Marie Martin in 1908, at Perth.[29]
Marion Rait Gillies, John Roberts Baillie’s sister-in-law, was recorded at No. 9 when the 1921 census was taken.[30] She was living with the Baillie family at 7 Dunedin Street in 1911[31] and remained at No. 9 until her death on 04 January 1948.[32] She was born at Bathgate on 08 September 1871.[33] In 1891 she was working as a hotel waitress in Girvan, Ayrshire[34] and in 1901 as a hosiery machinist in Bathgate.[35]
