Joseph Dods

Joseph Dods occupied Malta House in 1833-1834. He was a plumber and glazier with business premises at 71 Northumberland Street.1 He was born in Edinburgh on 14 May 1804, son of James Dods, a wright in Broughton, and his wife Jean Landels.2 His first listing in the Post Office Directory in 1826, when he was a 22 year old plumber, was at 35 Northumberland Street with a home address at 1 Elm Row,3 which was the address of his brother Archibald Dods, a carpenter, builder and undertaker, in 1825.4 Immediately before moving to Malta House, Joseph Dods lived at 47 Great King Street.5 He was living in Howe Street at the time of his second marriage6 and by 1841 he had moved his family to Lanark.7 They later moved to Glasgow where Joseph Dods died on 14 March 1847.8 He was buried in Calton Cemetery, Edinburgh.9

Joseph Dods married Mary Hawkins on 08 September 1826.10 She was born in 1807, daughter of Benjamin Hawkins and Agnes Dunn,11 and died at Malta House in July 1834, at the age of 26.12 Joseph Dods and Mary Hawkins had two children born who were both under 5 years old when the family entered Malta House.

    • Benjamin Hawkins Dods was born on 09 July 1829.13 In 1841 he was recorded at George Heriot Hospital, aged 11.14 He emigrated to Australia where he married Mary Ann Woodfin in 1856.15 He was a civile engineer and a founder of the Grand Victorian North-Western Canal Company. An obituary following his death at Hawthorn, Australia in April 1892, called him an ingenious hydraulic engineer but he was “possessed of but slight business aptitude, and therefore was unable to transform his engineering talents into solid coin.”16
    • Agnes Dun Dods was born about 1832. After her father’s death in 1847, she lived with her maternal grandfather, Benjamin Hawkins, and was recorded in his household at 7 Leverock Bank, Leith in 1851.17 She married George Espie in Edinburgh on 22 June 1853.18 He was a draper and clothier in business with his brother James, specialising in supplying the Australian market. George Espie died at 12 Forbes Road, Edinburgh on 05 November 190119 and Agnes Dun Dods or Espie died there on 09 September 1908.20

Joseph Dods married his second wife, Isabella Smith, widow of George Burton, on 19 April 1835, after his departure from Malta House.21
