Joseph Dods

Joseph Dods occupied Malta House in 1833/34. He was a plumber and glazier with business premises at 71 Northumberland Street. He was born in Edinburgh on 5 June 1804, son of James Dods and Jean Landels. His wife Mary Hawkins at Malta House in July 1834, at the age of 26. They were married on 8 September 1826, and had two children, Benjamin (born 1829) and Agnes (born 1830). Before moving to Malta House, Joseph Dods lived at 47 Great King Street. He remarried on 19 April 1835, to Isabella Smith, widow of George Burton (who died in January 1833). The family moved first to Lanark and then Glasgow, where Joseph Dods died on 24 April 1847.

 

Agnes Dods, Joseph’s daughter by his first wife, married George Espie and emigrated to Australia, where she died on 9 September 1908. Her brother Benjamin Dods, an engineer, was a founder of the Grand Victorian North-Western Canal Company and died at Hawthorn, Australia in April 1892.
