The Hodgson family

John Hodgson and his family took up residence at No. 6 in 1914[1] but a few months later he died there, of cancer, aged 57, on 17 March 1915.[2] Members of his family remained at No. 6 until the end of World War II.

John Hodgson was born at Lancaster, Lancashire in 1858, the son of an unmarried farmer’s daughter, Eunice Hodgson.[3] In 1891 he was an auctioneer’s clerk, living in Dalkeith.[4] By 1901, he had moved into Edinburgh and was a railway clerk.[5] His occupation in 1911 and in 1915 was also recorded as railway clerk.[6], [7]

John Hodgson married Catherine Halley in Edinburgh in 1886.[8] She was born in Edinburgh on 10 December 1863, daughter of John Halley, a railway clerk, and his wife Catherine Mathieson.[9] She died suddenly at No. 6 Malta Terrace on 17 February 1942.[10]

John Hodgson and Catherine Halley had four sons, including Stanley Melville Hodgson who died aged 2 years in 1898.[11] The other three all lived for a time at No. 6. They were:

      • Stewart Hodgson and his twin brother John were born at Dalkeith on 22 August 1887.[12] He was educated at George Heriot’s School, where he excelled at sport,[13] and graduated in medicine (M.B., Ch.B.) from the University of Edinburgh in 1911.[14] After a short period at the Royal Infirmary, he began to practice in Edinburgh. During the First World War he served as a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and in 1918 was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry: “For a whole day, often under direct rifle and machine-gun fire, he attended the wounded and directed their evacuation. Although wounded he continued his duties with exceptional coolness and skill until the advancing enemy compelled withdrawal.”[15]

After the war he returned to practice in Edinburgh, continuing to live at No. 6. He was also engaged in work for the Ministry of Pensions. He died at home on 09 August 1946.[16] His obituary in the British Medical Journal said he would be remembered “with esteem by his patients and colleagues alike, not only for his efficiency, kindliness, and sympathy, but also because of his cheerfulness and good humour.”[17]

      • John Hodgson was born at Dalkeith on 22 August 1887.[18] In 1911, he was an insurance clerk.[19] He was later described as an accountant. He married Alice Cameron Watson or Maude at St Andrews on 27 January 1948.[20] He died on 27 December 1962, when he was residing at 15 Buckingham Terrace, Edinburgh.[21]
      • William George Hodgson was born at Dalkeith on 31 December 1890. He was a railway clerk in 1911.[22] He was a private in the Royal Army Service Corps during the first World War, attesting on 10 June 1915, and serving in France and Egypt before being demobbed in June 1919.[23] He married Elizabeth Donaldson Sinclair at Blythswood on 06 March 1925.[24] William George Hodgson died in 1954 at Kilmarnock.[25]
