Janet Meikleham

Mrs Janet Meikleham occupied No. 5 between 1907 and 1913.¹ She was the widow of William Meikleham, a sugar broker, who died at the age of 45 on 07 July 1890.²

Janet Currie Beggam was born at Lochranza, Bute on 28 July 1858, daughter of shoemaker Daniel Beggam and his wife Mary Kerr.³ She married William Meikleham at Lochranza on 18 September 1882.⁴ The family moved to Edinburgh before 1901⁵ and emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1913.⁶ Janet Beggam or Meikleham died at Sydney, Australia on 18 April 1936.⁷

Janet Beggam and William Meikleham had five children during the eight years of their marriage. Their two daughters were recorded living at No. 5 Malta Terrace in the 1911 census:⁸

• • Penelope Young Meikleham was born at The Lodge, Lochranza, Bute on 29 January 1888.⁹ In 1911, she was recorded as living on private means.¹⁰ She first travelled to Australia on the SS Niagara, departing on 13 March 1913.¹¹ She died on 22 April 1965 at Canterbury, New Zealand.¹²
  • Joan Thomson Meikleham was born at Lochranza on 28 September 1890.¹³ She also travelled to Australia in 1913. She married Arthur Edwin Fallwell, a marine engineer, in New Zealand in 1916,¹⁴ and was widowed in 1940.¹⁵ She returned to England and died in London on 31 May 1971.¹⁶
