Margaret Torok de Varad

Mrs Margaret Torok de Varad lived at No. 3 from 1939[1] until her death there on 03 September 1951.[2] She was the widow of Julius Martin Ladislaus Torok de Varad, who died on 08 April 1918 at 32 Fenney Street, Salford, Lancashire.[3] Before occupying No. 3, she lived next door at No.4 with her daughter and son-in-law, James Bannerman McAra.

Margaret Mary Hilda Torok de Varad was born in Hungary about 1887, the daughter of Joseph Torok de Varad, a landowner, and his wife Rose Maska. She married in Julius Martin Ladislaus Torok de Varad in Hungary where the first of their six children was born about 1901.[4] The family left Hungary after 1907, moving first to South Africa[5] and then, before the end of the first world war, to Britain. In the 1921 census, Margaret Mary Torok was recorded living at 48 East Claremont Street, Edinburgh with four of her children.[6]

Three of the children lived at No. 3 Malta Terrace with their mother:

    • Stephen Emmanuel Torok de Varad was born in South Africa on 02 November 1913.[10] His naturalisation was registered on 12 January 1967[11] and he died in Edinburgh in 2002.[12]
    • Helen or Ellen Torok de Varad was born in Hungary in 1904[13] and died in Edinburgh in 1950.[14] She was listed at No. 3 in the electoral register between 1931 and 1950.
