Mary Penn was listed in the electoral register at No. 3 Malta Terrace between 1932 and 1937.1 She was at 25 Torphichen Street in 19392 and after the second world war at 27 Watson Crescent,3 which was her home address when she died on 19 February 1950, aged 80 years.4
Mary Ann Penn was born on 18 December 1868 at Kinneff and Catterine, Kincardineshire,5 where her father William Penn was a coast guard. Her mother was Mary Ann Pride. The family were at St Vigeans coastguard station, near Arbroath, in 1881.6 Mary was recorded in the 1891 census as a general servant in the household of George Watson, a chartered accountant, at 6 Westhall Gardens.7 She later worked as a self-employed dressmaker, which was her occupation in 1901, when she was living with her now elderly parents at 68 Queen Street.8 In 1921 she and her sister Lydia, both unmarried, were dressmakers living at 108 George Street, along with four lodgers.9
