The electoral register for 1932 lists William M. Maitland and Euphemia L. Maitland at No. 3 Malta Terrace. William McCulloch Maitland, a house painter, married Euphemia Lowe Mathewson, by declaration, at 6 Bank Street, Edinburgh on 14 May 1932.[1] Rented rooms at No. 3 were probably their first home.
William McCulloch Maitland was born in Edinburgh on 14 July 1911, son of George Maitland, also a house painter, and his wife Ann Gantly. In 1921 George, his wife and their eight children lived at 50 India Place.[2] When he married William M. Maitland was living with his parents at 45 India Place, a short walk from Malta Terrace.
Euphemia Lowe Mathewson was born in Sunderland, Durham in 1912,[3] daughter of Charles Mathewson, a boilermaker and native of Kinghorn Fife, and Agnes Stafford. In 1921 the Mathewson family were living at 42 Fourth Street, Newtongrange, Midlothian,[4] which was Euphemia’s address when she married in 1932.
The marriage of William M. Maitland and Euphemia L. Mathewson did not endure. By 1937, William Maitland was back with his parents at 45 India Place, without his wife.[5] By 1950 Euphemia had adopted the surname Natusiewicz and was living at 12 Royal Circus,[6] a stone’s throw from India Place. She died of brain haemorrhage at the Western General Hospital on 30 May 1953. The informant on her death registration was her ‘intimate friend’ Antoni Natusiewicz of 12 Royal Circus.[7]
