John Young

John Young lived at No. 2a between 1915 and 1949.¹ He was a tailor, born 16 September 1871 at Torphichen, West Lothian, son of William Young and Christina Irvine.² The family moved to Edinburgh when he was a young child and were at 22 Caledonian Crescent in 1881.³ In 1911, he was described as a (master) tailor and an employee, living at 18 Elgin Place.⁴ The 1921 census shows he was a tailor employed in his brother’s business William I. Young, Tailors and Clothiers⁵ whose premises were at 69 Shandwick Place.⁶ John Young died on 04 March 1950 at 25 Corstorphine Hill Avenue, his daughter’s home.⁷

John Young married Maggie H Banks in 1898.⁸ Margaret Hamilton Banks was born at Bathgate, West Lothian in 1873 daughter of coal miner John Banks and his wife Margaret Arthur.^{9, 10} She died in 1949.¹¹

They had two children, both recorded at No. 2a in the 1921 census.¹² William Irvine Young was born in Edinburgh in 1902.¹³ In 1921 he was a wallpaper warehouseman, living at 2a Malta Terrace¹⁴ where he died on 22 February 1939, aged 36.¹⁵

Margaret Arthur Young was born in 1910. She married George Edward Short on 21 July 1939¹⁶ and died in 1982.¹⁷
