James Wilson Monteith was living at 7 St Bernard’s Row when he died suddenly on 26 January 1943.1 His widow Janet remained there until 1962.2 In 1939 they were resident at 11 Dundonald Street, Edinburgh.3
James W. Monteith was born in Dublin, Ireland on 10 May 1890, son of James Monteith, a clerk, and Catherine Wilson, who were both Scottish.4 The family were at 13 Carlyle Place, Musselburgh in 1901.5 James W. Monteith was a stationer, resident at 26 Mansfield Avenue, Musselburgh, when he enlisted in December 1915, to serve as a private in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He was discharged medically unfit in September 1916.6 In 1921 he was a bookbinder employed by T. Nelson & Sons7 and in 1939 he was a ‘stationary traveller.’8
James Wilson Monteith married Janet Brown McLean in 1912.9 She was born at Airdrie, Lanarkshire on 13 February 1891, daughter of John Brown, a coal miner, and Maggie Drysdale. She died at Blackpool in 1979.10
Their daughter Catherine Wilson Monteith, born on 30 August 1916,11 married William Semple Glen at Musselburgh on 04 August 1939.12 The couple lived with Catherine’s widowed mother and were listed at 7 St Bernard’s Row in the electoral register from1945 to 1962. William S. Glen, who was born at Musselburgh in 1914,13 son of Samuel Glen, a hotel porter, and Jane Semple, was a restaurant bar attendant when he married. He died at Blackpool, Lancashire on 19 October 1989.14 Catherine Wilson Monteith or Glen died at Blackpool, Lancashire on 26 May 2005.15
